The 30-second pitch
Trout & Trails is a community platform built specifically for trout anglers. Unlike Facebook groups or generic fishing apps, T&T is organized around the real fabric of the sport: your local Trout Unlimited chapter, the buddies you actually fish with, the rivers you actually fish, and the fly shops and guides that keep the community running. Members log catches, watch real-time USGS water gauges, contribute to a community-built fish-identification wiki, run chapter tournaments with verified results, and trade used gear with people who understand it. Joining is free; chapters get a free home base; tournament hosts pay a flat $25 with no take on entry fees.
Our mission
To give trout anglers a calm, community-owned home on the internet — one that respects their privacy, supports their local chapters, and treats fishing as a community practice instead of an audience metric.
Three commitments behind that:
- Chapters get a free home base. Trout Unlimited chapters seeded into the platform from day one (367 of them). Free forever for chapters to organize events, share trip reports, and grow membership.
- 0% take on tournament entries.Hosts pay a flat $25 to publish a tournament; entry fees flow through Stripe Express directly to the host's account. We don't skim the prize pool.
- Privacy-first, surveillance-free. No ad networks. No third-party trackers. Catch locations can be hidden or generalized. We never sell user data. Ever.
What's inside — by feature
Community
- The Stream. A chronological feed of catches, photos, and conversation from people you actually fish with. No algorithm, no rage-bait, no “suggested for you.”
- Trout Unlimited chapters. 367 TU chapters pre-seeded with home pages, member rosters, event calendars, and tournament tools. Chapter admins get the keys for free.
- Buddies + Trip planner. Add the people you fish with as buddies. Plan upcoming trips, invite buddies, share gear lists, and coordinate carpooling from one place.
- Direct messages. Private DM threads with anyone in your network. Trip planning, fly recommendations, “hey are you fishing tomorrow?”
Fishing
- Catch journal. Log every fish with photo, species, length, weight, water temp, method, and weather. Private by default; share to the Stream when you want to.
- Live water gauges. 14,000+ USGS + Environment Canada gauges, pinned to a map, with real-time flow and stage. Watch your home water before you drive.
- FishWiki. A community-built field guide. Species pages with identification photos, habitat, common-confusion warnings, fly recommendations, and seasonal patterns.
- Camps directory. 100+ trout-side campgrounds mapped, with amenities filters (showers, hookups, dog-friendly, ADA access) and links to reserve.
- Fly shops & guides directory. 130+ verified shops and guides nationwide. Pinned on a map, claimed by real owners, reviewed by the community.
- Marketplace. Buy and sell used gear with other anglers. Cash-only. No fees. No shipping middlemen.
Tournaments
- Real chapter-run competitions. Multi-species or top-N scoring, division support, team or solo formats, verified catches via a 7-layer verification chain.
- Live leaderboards. Standings update the moment a catch is logged. Per-species big-fish boards. Real-time tournament chat for registered anglers.
- Prize-pool transparency. Hosts set a guaranteed minimum + per-entry percentage. Anglers see the running pot. Payouts via Stripe Express direct to winners.
- 0% platform take. Hosts pay a flat $25 to publish. We don't touch entry fees.
- Organizer tools. Captain handoff, organizer handoff, late-submission window, AI-assisted catch verification, organizer review queue for flagged catches.
Anywhere you fish
- Mobile-first PWA. Install as a real app on iOS and Android. Works offline (catch logging keeps working in cellular dead zones — syncs when you're back in service).
- Push notifications. Buddy posts, tournament leaderboard movement, chapter event reminders, water-gauge alerts when your home river hits your target flow.
- The Drift digest. A weekly email summary of what your chapter, your buddies, and your watched waters have been up to. (Opt-in; we don't spam.)
Privacy & trust
- Catch geofencing. Generalize or fully hide catch locations. Default: shared with chapter only.
- Verified-shop badges. Real ownership verification via the claim flow.
- Verified catches. 7-layer verification chain (photo, timestamp, GPS, water-gauge cross-check, organizer review, AI vision check, peer flagging).
- No third-party trackers. No Facebook pixel, no Google Analytics. Self-hosted analytics only.
- Account deletion in 2 clicks. Settings → Delete account. Hard delete. No “deactivation purgatory.”

Founder's note
Trout & Trails is built by Lee Odom and One Overland, LLC — an angler-owned company in the central US. The idea came from being tired of bouncing between three Facebook groups, a chapter mailing list, a USGS bookmark folder, and a group text just to plan a Saturday on the river. Trout fishing has the best community in the outdoor world — it deserves a calm, community-owned home on the internet to match.
We're free during early access. We'll stay free for the community side forever. Money comes from optional things: tournament hosting fees, branded merch, eventually some chapter-tier subscriptions for chapters that want extra tools. Never from ads. Never from selling your data.
If that resonates, come fish with us.

Subject: A free home base for [Chapter Name] — and 0% take on your tournaments
Hi [name], I built Trout & Trails because I was tired of bouncing between three Facebook groups, a mailing list, and a group text just to plan a Saturday on the river. We've pre-seeded all 367 TU chapters into the platform — including [Chapter Name] — with a free home page, member roster, and event calendar. Two things I think you'll care about: 1. Free forever for chapters. Organize events, share trip reports, grow membership without paying anything. 2. 0% take on tournaments. $25 flat to publish a tournament. Entry fees go directly to your chapter's Stripe account. We don't touch the prize pool. Want me to walk you through the chapter dashboard? Reply to this email or grab a 15-minute slot at [link]. Either way, your chapter page is already live: [link]. Tight lines, Lee Odom · troutandtrails.com
